THE VIRTUAL POWER PLANT MICROGRID TRIAL
Virtual Power Plant (VPP) or Microgrid networks are designed to aggregate the capacities of distributed energy resources to moderate frequency and voltage fluctuations in the grid while supporting peak demand events that would ordinarily place strain upon the network. Creating a distributed energy network with both generation and storage capacities, VPPs represent improved efficiency through reduced losses associated with transmission, increased responsiveness to events in the network and provide energy market regulators and operators the capacity to operate ancillary services for grid stability. Often referred to as an “internet of energy”, VPP and Micro-Grid networks are shown to provide an alternative to traditional power plants with advantages in efficiency, agility and responsiveness that a more traditional network cannot provide. Virtual Power Plants create the possibility for consumer and third party operators to capitalise on supply/demand energy modeling through unitary and unified energy trading, leveraging energy arbitrage type arrangements.
South Australia hosts one of the worlds largest VPP networks with growth expected to continue through to 2025. In partnership with the Sharpe Group, Tesla, Sonnen and other market operators, my work has centred on establishing the marketability and viability of microgrid networks in South Australia, conducting industry leading trials in the field. In conjunction with innovative market leading VPP network operators, i have secured trial positions in the South Australian VPP program allowing my customers to enjoy reduced payback periods and increased ROI on new home solar and battery systems.
ENVIRONMENTALLY SUSTAINABLE
ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT
The use of renewable energy solutions such as solar generation and battery storage has far reaching positive impacts not only economically but also environmentally. A typical households energy consumption, without the addition of solar or other clean energy generation, is comprised of energy generated from coal, fossil fuels and other non renewable sources. These sources are significant contributors to greenhouse gas emissions & increased carbon levels in the atmosphere with typical household utilising approximately 3,917kgs of coal for its energy generation annually.
Solar energy and battery storage solutions provide the opportunity for customers to mitigate the pollution cause by unsustainable & environmentally harmful energy production, reduce their personal carbon footprint and export surplus clean energy to the network to offset carbon emissions created through pollutant rich categories of energy production.
Calculations by the Environmental Protection Agency show that the packages enjoyed by the clients I have worked with, total a reduction of greenhouse gas and carbon emissions equivalent to 195,856kgs of coal or 172,337 litres of fuel having been burnt to generate the same amount of energy from these sources annually. This reduction in pollution is comparable to the effect of having planted 10,373 trees per year.
